My Kinky Twists Weekend.

1:00 AM

My People, how was your weekend?

I hope it went well and not too fast. I've given up on weekends; it seems like Saturday and Sunday combine to be less than 24 hours. I always have huge plans and end up doing little. Anyway, two weekends ago, was my Kinky Twists Weekend. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen some pictures of my twists. Grab a cup of water and sip, while I tell you all about it.

I had been planning on doing my hair for a couple of weeks now. I miss those days in Nigeria, when I will just walk to a corner and braid my hair for an equivalent of $6. My current location, braids cost an average of $200. My dear, it didn't take long before I became my personal hairdresser. God bless all the people that made YouTube videos to help me. My hairdressing skills started taking a backseat when I met some amazing people who help out and charge a lot less. But I decided to try this kinky twists myself and save some money in between.

Prior to this, I had Ghana weaving, which was done by Zi.

I carried that style for about one month. I loved it! It was  easy to carry and I just loved how air was touching my scalp. I planned my next hair style (kinky twist). This gave me time to clear my schedule, get all the things I'll need, and most importantly budget.

For my twists, I got three packs of Marley braid hair from Dallaswig on Ebay. It cost me less than $20 and was delivered within 3 days. I found that the stores charge a little more, so consider buying online if you will like to save a little money; compare prices before you buy.

I finally found good use of the Miami-traffic. I took out almost 80% of my Ghana-weaving while heading home. I got a sample of this dark and lovely conditioner.

I love-love-love the mango fragrance.

I'm sure you are wondering 'she used only 3 packs?!?!'. No I didn't. But, I re-used my old Marley braiding hair. Before this time, I was very skeptical about reusing hair. This was my first time, and I feel like pinching myself for all the good hair I've thrown away. Marley braiding hair is very easy to wash and reuse. This tutorial is very similar to the steps I used.

This was my first time doing a full kinky twist. Here are some YouTube videos I found helpful:
In this video, Mae is detailed and takes you through the steps all the way from washing your hair to finishing the twists. Mae is a natural hair & lifestyle blogger in addition to other amazing skills. Visit her blog Natural Chica, and follow her on Instagram @thenaturalchica

This video is also great. If you would like short twists and also want to curl the ends, Breanna takes you through easy steps to achieve this. Breanna is an author and entrepreneur. Follow her on Instagram @breannarutter

So I started out wanting to do Havana twists and ended up doing Kinky twists. That's a story for another day. However, Dr. "Beautifulbrwnbabydol" has an excellent tutorial that works for both. Follow her on Instagram @Beautifulbrwnbabydol.

You can always search YouTube for more videos, if you need more help.

I completely underestimated how long twisting my hair was going to take. I convinced myself it will be a few hours and I created a laundry list of things to do afterwards. It took me about 14 hours to complete. Don't be afraid - it's my first time. Hopefully, my next try will be shorter.

Time for the big reveal - Drum rolls......please. Here is what my twists look like.

I used colors: 1B/30 (old hair), 33 (old hair), & 1B (new hair). I love having multiple colors for my braids.

That was how my Saturday was given to Kinky twists. It wasn't perfect; you can see some twists that need help (lol); but, I'm happy with how it turned out. The 14 hours was worth it for me because I saved myself a couple of hundred dollars and will be rocking my braids for at least six weeks. Braids are one of my favorite hairstyles; they are easy to maintain.

Can you believe the semester is half-way gone? I hope you are staying above water. If you have Fall break anytime soon, getting your hair twisted might be a good way to spend some of your free time. While it might be somewhat tasking, you can use that time to catch up on your favorite TV shows or movies (that's what I did) and relax. This hairstyle cost me $20 ( I had some old hair). If you have enough old hair, it could be cheaper or even cost nothing. If you have to buy hair and you are trying to save money, you can do Havana twist instead. Havana twists are cut bigger than kinky twists.

That's all for today....The comment box is a scroll away.
