How I Care For My 32 Kids

1:21 AM

Let me guess: you clicked on this link out of curiosity or because you thought the title was absolutely RIDICULOUS. Ha! either way, I'm happy you did. Yes, I do have 32 kids; but before I continue, I'll tell you a short story.

Nikki was a girl of about 18 years. She just started growing her wisdom tooth which was a major milestone for her, as she thought to herself. It wasn't as painful as her friends and relatives had described but then bleeding started. No it wasn't the famous monthly visitor, it was each time she brushed; painless, so she ignored it. She was intelligent enough to know that gum bleeding meant something, but as a student she could neither afford a dentist nor a dental insurance. She silently prayed, hoped, and wished the bleeding will stop and nothing serious will result. What was worse than seeing bright red blood every morning and some evenings was the uncertainty that surrounded what could possible be wrong or go further wrong. The internet became her doctor, blogs became her nurses, her prescription was her fear mixed with hopes.

Sadly, that's what the world is like today. Healthcare is harder to get, in comparison to a smartphone. Like Nikki, a lot of people fall into the group of not being able to access healthcare; dental care is not as much as a thought. Whether you live in developed or developing countries, the conditions are either absence of dental care or inability to afford it. Youths/students are hit really hard.

So....I have 32 kids: they are in my mouth (shocker). Providing these kids with dedicated care is cheaper than fixing the complications that may arise from poor care. Recent research has linked some dental conditions to problems in the heart (this is not to scare you). But taking care of your teeth is more than achieving a bright smile. So here is how I take care of my kids. At the risk of sounding like an outdated record: a) Brush twice a day...(honestly, it could be tough to keep up with at first, but once you make it a habit, just like other habits its hard to break), mouthwash is a good friend, dental floss should become your best friend.

Dental floss is my main focus: this is the one that slides through the crack for a lot of us. Frankly, I recently understood its importance. You know the milky residue on your teeth, mostly felt in the morning, it's called 'plaque'. Well, it's also in between your teeth and a tooth-brush doesn't access it. You know how nasty it is when you see dirt in between clean top surfaces? Think of that in your mouth. It accumulates and can cause cavities, gum infections, and all the other members of the party. The dental floss helps with that. Meet my best friends!!

This is not an exhaustive list; there are other fancy mouth care items. This doesn't serve as a medical advice or in any way suggest not seeing a dentist regularly (at least twice a year). However, those four items (toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss) are basic, relative cheap and can go a long way in caring for those kids in our mouth. This can make life as a student not complicated by dental issues.

I wish you a beautiful week, bright smile, and healthy mouth.
Have a winning-day
